The Story of Baita Gimont

Nearly a century of mountains, people and passion for the alpine environment. A story spanning generations.

Since 1935, in the heart of the Monti della Luna

For almost a century, Baita Gimont has been a landmark for mountain lovers. Nestled in the Monti della Luna basin and overlooking the border between Italy and France, it continues to welcome hikers, skiers, families and travellers seeking an authentic mountain experience. Today, as in the past, this place remains a meeting point between nature, hospitality and a passion for the alpine environment.

A story that began in 1935

Baita Gimont was built in 1935. On 31 May 1964, CAI ULE Genova officially acquired the property, fulfilling the section's plan to have its own alpine refuge, as many other sections of the Italian Alpine Club had already done. At the end of June that same year, with a three-day celebration, the section officially took possession of the building, opening a new chapter in its history. Since then, the refuge has become an integral part of CAI ULE Genova's identity and of the memories of generations of members, hikers and skiers.

A bond with these mountains

Well before the refuge was purchased, the Claviere and Monti della Luna area was already popular with many ULE members. It was here, in January 1923, that the association's ski section held one of its very first organised ski outings — testament to a bond with this land that has lasted over a century. Over the years, the connection to the area never faded: first through skiing, then through hiking and the outdoor activities that still bring these mountains to life today. A relationship built over time, made of shared experiences, friendships and a passion for the alpine environment.

Baita Gimont today

Since 2020, Mariano and Mariana have been taking care of the refuge, aiming to preserve its identity while making it ever more welcoming for guests. Between 2021 and 2022, a major renovation of the rooms was carried out.

"We chose to reduce the number of beds in order to prioritise comfort, giving every room a private bathroom and creating warmer, more functional spaces. A choice that reflects our approach to hospitality, with the utmost attention to the guest experience."

A project built with passion

The refuge's interiors were enhanced thanks to the collaboration with Fleur de Neige of Claviere and the sensibility of Mimma and Elisa, who helped define the style and atmosphere that characterise the building today. Details, materials and colours dialogue with the surrounding landscape, creating welcoming spaces that preserve the alpine soul of the refuge.
